Dr. Ahmed is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Developmental Biomechanics group. She is working on the role of mechanical forces on matrix emergence and organisation in the developing skeleton and consequent effect on the material properties of the tissue. She is also investigating the effect of lack of mechanical forces on the collagen secretion particularly its involvement with the ER stress pathway. Her key contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research include proposing an effective strategy for conferring chondroprotection against mechanical injury both in vivo and in vitro to improve clinical outcome after orthopaedic surgery and describing the role of key cytokines and growth factors in messenchymal stem cell-mediated cartilage repair. She also showed that damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) play a crucial role in priming and directing mesenchymal stem cells to migrate to the injury site. She completed her PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Sheffield (2017) and also holds a bachelor degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh.
