Zhuang (Gabi) Xiong is a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and the Conway Institute at University College Dublin. The current focus of his research is on the influence of mechanical loading on postnatal articular cartilage in terms of tissue morphogenesis and composition. This research is driven by the existing knowledge gap concerning the mechanobiology of chondrocytes and the mechanism of mechano-regulation behind the zonal emergence in postnatal cartilage tissue. Dr Xiong is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant.

Before joining University College Dublin in 2025, Zhuang held a research position in the Laboratory of Osteoarticular Biology, Bioengineering and Bioimaging at Université Paris Cité from 2021 to 2025. During this period, he successfully completed his Ph.D. titled “Multiscale modeling of human trabecular bone to design an optimal biomimetic scaffold for bone tissue engineering”. His doctoral research focused on understanding how the structure and mechanical behaviour of native bone tissue influence the mechanical stimulation perceived by bone cells, with the goal of developing in vitro bone models.
